Summary

  • Paediatric cochlear implantation provides electrical hearing access when appropriately fitted hearing aids give inadequate benefit. A functioning auditory pathway and sustained rehabilitation are needed; spoken-language outcomes vary.

  • Early assessment matters, particularly in congenital profound deafness and after meningitis. Maintain accessible language and useful amplification throughout assessment; surgery is one part of the communication plan. BCIG quality standard, 2023 NICE QS19, updated 2024

  • Family-centred decision: establish the child's needs, preferred communication modes, development, support and realistic goals. Additional disability does not automatically exclude benefit.
